Beginning today (Sept. 27, 2021) vehicle traffic isn’t being allowed on the causeway that connects Pierre to LaFramboise Island.
Pierre City project manager Gidget Palmer says the temporary closure will allow a new water main to be installed in Steamboat Park between James Street and Poplar Avenue.
She says pedestrian access to the causeway will be maintained via the walking path– with the exception of access from Poplar Avenue.
The traffic restriction is expected to remain in place for two weeks. The new treatment facility is on track to be complete by the end of 2022.
In June 2018, Pierre voters approved a $37.5 million project to build a drinking water treatment facility. The new treatment process will pull surface water from the Missouri River. Pierre’s current drinking water comes from a well system fed by an underground aquifer.
