The bridge replacement project over the Missouri River between Pierre and Fort Pierre is about six months behind schedule.
Fort Pierre mayor Gloria Hanson told the city council during this week’s meeting (Oct. 4, 2021) that’s what she’s been told by the South Dakota Department of Transportation.
Bridge project coordinator Denae Johnson shared the revised timeline.
She says traffic control across the bridge through the end of the year will continue like it has been.
Johnson says more details about changes to the timeline will be available tomorrow (Oct. 8, 2021).
When finished, the bridge will be 77 feet, 11 inches wide, 1686 feet, 2 inches long, have as much steel as is found in 845 average size cars, hold four lanes of traffic and cost $49.99 million. The current structure carries traffic from US Highways 14 and 83 and SD Highway 34 across the bridge that serves as the primary crossing point over the Missouri River between Fort Pierre and Pierre.
A 2016 study done by the SDDOT concluded the John C. Waldron Memorial Bridge, built in 1962, has reached the end of its useful life and needs to be replaced.
