The South Dakota Department of Revenue says there have been some delays, so the new system will NOT launch in November 2021.
ORIGINAL STORY OCTOBER 13, 2021:
The South Dakota Department of Motor Vehicles will be implementing a new software system next month (Nov. 29, 2021) that will affect all motor vehicle transactions– including title transfers, registration renewals, etc.
Hughes County Finance Officer Thomas Oliva recommends people needing to do renewals in November come in early (1st letter of last names starting with T/U/V/W/X/Y/Z).
Oliva says he got a preview of the new system at the South Dakota Association of County Officials meeting last month (Sept. 2021).

Again, motor vehicle registrations may be renewed up to 90 days prior to their expiration date. Cash, check, money order or credit cards are accepted. Please provide your renewal card and state- issued ID or driver’s license to renew your vehicle registration. When paying with a credit card please know that a 2.5% service fee applies for Visa, MasterCard and Discover. A 3.5% + $1.50 fee applies to American Express card transactions.
