Pierre’s senior citizens have a menu of opportunities to stay physically active this fall with the Pierre Recreation Department’s Seasoned Citizens Program.
The physical wellness classes, designed specifically for seniors, kickoff next week and include Zumba Gold, Tai Chi, Chair Yoga and Chair Tai Chi.
Zumba Gold classes are a lower-intensity version of Zumba dance classes. They are offered at 9 a.m. every Monday and Wednesday between Oct. 18 and Dec. 22, 2021, at the multi-purpose room of the Oahe Family YMCA.
Tai Chi, a workout to improve strength, flexibility, and balance, is offered at 10 a.m. every Monday and Wednesday between Oct. 18 and Dec. 22, 2021, at the multi-purpose room of the Oahe Family YMCA.
On Tuesdays between Oct. 18 and Dec. 22, 2021, the Pierre Area Senior Center will host Chair Exercises at 10 in the morning. The classes will alternate weekly between Chair Yoga and Chair Tai Chi. These classes are designed for people with limited mobility or an inability to stand for long periods of time.
“We know that physically, mentally, and socially, it’s important for people to be active throughout all stages of life,” said Mindy Cheap, Pierre Recreation Superintendent. “These classes give our senior citizens one more way to stay active in our community.”
All classes are free to members of the Pierre Area Senior Center. Non-members can participate for $10 per class for the fall season.
