SIOUX FALLS – Third- and fourth-place finishes by Pierce Baumberger and Alex Schumacher helped the Miller Rustler boys win the school’s first-ever team state championship in Class B Saturday at the SDHSAA State Cross Country Championships at Yankton Trail Park.
Miller’s previous best boys team finish was second in Class A in 2002.
Baumberger, a freshman who made the top 15 in Class A in 2020, came third individually in 16:58.52. Schumacher, a sophomore, followed in fourth with 17:14.13.
Philip was fourth, with Trey Larson finishing 20th individually. Kimball/White Lake was fifth, and the Wildkats’ best finisher was 14th-place runner Park Sinclair. Ipswich was eighth, with Faulkton Area 10th.
Kimball/White Lake won their second straight girls Class B team championship by only three points over second-place Potter County. The Wildkats won the 2020 championship by just six points.
Eighth-grader Autumn Baker was Kimball/White Lake’s best finisher, running second at 19:41.58, just over two seconds behind Class B individual champion Ella Boekelheide of Northwestern Area.
Danika Kaup of Potter County was seventh individually, with Presley Terkildsen of Philip finishing ninth.
Ipswich was fourth as a team with Gregory eighth, Platte-Geddes 12th and Miller 14th.
Two Central South Dakota runners finished in the top 13 individually in the boys Class A race. Kade Watson of Winner was seventh, with Dom Santiago of Chamberlain running 13th.
The Chamberlain girls finished as the runner-up in the Class A girls meet, the Cubs’ best finish since coming second in 2004. Sophomore Kinsey Evans ran fourth in 18:57.67. Also in the top 10 was Heidi Olson of Mobridge-Pollock, who ran ninth.
