Gymnast Ryen Sheppick and wrestler Kylen Horsley have been named as the Pierre Athletic Coaches Assocation-Avera Athletes of the Week for the week ending January 22.
Pierre Gymnastics Head Coach Rebecca Feller praised the recent efforts of Sheppick, a freshman: “Ryen had to step up to fill empty spots on the Governor Gymnastics roster due to illness and injuries. She did an excellent job competing clean routines on multiple events. She led the Governors on vault and all around at the recent Gym-O-Rama in Rapid City. Vault has been one of her weakest events this year, but she has really put some extra time in, and it shows. She recently conquered a new vault with an increased start value, which not only helps her score but the team score. When Ryen is not in the gym she is working hard at rodeo, which she also excels at. She works hard in the classroom and maintains good grades.”
Horsley a senior, wrestles at 145 and 152 pounds. Boys Wrestling Head Coach Shawn Lewis said of Horsley: “Kylen shows up every day and works his hardest. Despite being a senior and not having a varsity spot, Kylen’s passion and work ethic have never faltered. He has never had a poor attitude because of it or wanted to quit like others would. Instead, he loves being a part of this team, his team. His coaching staff loves his everyday efforts, example, and great attitude that he brings. The team honestly wouldn’t be the same without him. His affect will remain on this team for years to come as he really has taken a leadership role and taken the junior varsity kids under his wing. He has shown them the example of how to work hard, have fun and how be a great teammate. Kylen’s willingness to jump between multiple weight classes to get himself and other people matches demonstrates his unselfishness. This no-quit attitude and unselfish devotion to the team is what makes Kylen Horlsey a Governor Wrestler for life.”
