Two people from Willmar, Minnesota, were arrested in Pierre Sunday (Feb. 20, 2022) after leading law enforcement officers on vehicle and foot pursuits.
Police Captain Bryan Walz says an officer responded to the 800 block of North Garfield about 10:30am Sunday a male and a female behind a business, possibly having a disagreement. Upon arrival, an officer spoke with 29 year old Damian Hoff and 33 year old Kaila Voigt, who initially gave the officer fictitious names. When the officer confronted them, they fled in their car. The officer gave pursuit, however was not able to locate the vehicle.
Not long afterward, the Central South Dakota Communications dispatch center received a 911 call reporting the car was on Bushfield Drive. Officers arrived and for a second time Hoff and Voigt fled, but this time with officers in pursuit. The chase went south on Garfield Avenue to Wells Avenue and then east out of Pierre. Officers pursued until they determined it was unsafe and terminated the pursuit.
Then at 1:30pm that same day, a Hughes County deputy was dispatched to an address on Clark Road for a suspicious vehicle parked between hay bales with its hood up. The deputy arrived, located the car and a third pursuit ensued. Hoff struck a South Dakota Highway Patrol car while attempting to flee and ultimately rolled the vehicle on Clark Road. He then fled on foot. Voigt was taken into custody at the scene of the crash. After a search, Hoff was located hiding in the area. Both were taken to the Hughes County Jail.
Kaila Voigt is charged with:
- Obstructing Officer, Jailer, Firefighter
- False Impersonation to Deceive Law Enforcement
- Ingestion of controlled drug or substance as felony
Damian Hoff is charged with:
- False Impersonation to Deceive Law Enforcement
- Failure to Obey Traffic Signal
- Failure to Drive On Right Half of Roadway
- Speeding Obey Speed Limits
- Eluding -Aggravated
- Stop Sign Violation and Proceed Without Safe
- Reckless Driving
- Obstructing Officer, Jailer, Firefighter
