Last year (2021), West River/Lyman-Jones Rural Water told Fort Pierre they have until 2032 to find a different source of water for the town because the Mni Wiconi Rural Water System will be restricting the amount of water WR/LJ is allowed to provide for its customers.
Fort Pierre Public Works Director Rick Hahn told the city council at last night’s (March 7, 2022) meeting they’re looking into the options.
Hahn says Fort Pierre could put an intake across the Missouri River from where Pierre’s is, but the permitting process would be more complicated.
As Fort Pierre looks for the best places to put water lines and storage tanks, Hahn says the goal is to damage as little of the existing water infrastructure as possible.
Hahn says they need to have a narrative turned in by the end of the month (March 2022) if they want to be included in the State Water Plan.
Fort Pierre water customers had to deal with water restrictions about half a dozen times last year because of major breaks in Mni Wiconi Rural Water System pipelines.
