KALAMAZOO, MI – Team South Dakota, featuring Pierre’s Carter Sanderson, won the USA Hockey Tier II 2A National Championship Monday with a 6-3 win over the Alaska Oilers.
Sanderson, playing on this team of select players from around the state for the second straight year, scored a goal and two assists. In six games in this tournament, Sanderson had six goals and six assists.
Cameron Ritter and Carson Myhre scored in the first period, both set up by Sanderson, to give Team SD a 2-0 lead. Alaska, who defeated Team SD in the quarterfinals last year, rallied to tie the game in the second period before Ritter put the South Dakotans ahead to stay with 32 seconds left in the middle period. Myhre, Colton Merchen and Sanderson scored in the third period.
Carson Hundstad won in net with 13 saves.
