JULY 7, 2022:
Two people from Duchess, Alberta, Canada have been identified as the people who died Sunday morning (July 3, 2022) in a two-vehicle crash one mile east of Colome in Tripp County.
Five others were injured.
Preliminary crash information from the South Dakota Highway Patrol indicates a 2001 Ford F-150 pickup driven by 33 year old Justin Hurtado of Winner was westbound on US Highway 18 when it crossed the center line. The pickup collided head on with an eastbound 2015 GMC Sierra 3500 pickup pulling a cattle trailer, being driven by 45 year old Kyle Larson from Duchess, Alberta, Canada.
Two of the occupants in the GMC died as a result of their injuries. A 40-year-old Darsey Larson died at the Winner hospital and 14-year-old Koye Larson was pronounced dead at the Gregory hospital. Both are also from Duchess, Alberta, Canada. Kyle Larson suffered life-threatening injuries and was airlifted to a Sioux Falls hospital. All three occupants were wearing seat belts.
Three of the four occupants of the Ford pickup– the driver Justin Hurtado, 36 year old Leonard Boyer of Colome and 32 year old Veronica Hurtado of Winner– all sustained serious non-life threatening injuries. They were transported to Sioux Falls hospitals. A 17 year old male passenger received minor injuries. All but the female passenger were wearing seat belts. Charges are pending against Justin Hurtado.
That section of US Highway 18 was closed to traffic for about seven hours. South Dakota’s Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.
