The TeamMates mentoring program in Pierre is in its fourth year of matching middle and high school youth to adults with similar interests.
Mentor Kim Leiferman says her group is helping to get the TeamMates program started in the Stanley County School system.
T.F. Riggs High School Sophomore Jayna Blume has been with the TeamMates program since it started in Pierre.
Mentor Laura Kelly says both mentors and mentees fill out surveys about the interests they have, which are then used to pair up adults and youth.
TeamMates State Director for South Dakota Jess Karim says prospective mentors go through training before they are matched with a student.
Along with Pierre, other schools in South Dakota with a TeamMates Mentoring program are Belle Fourche, Custer-Hermosa School District, Lead-Deadwood, Rapid City, Sioux Falls and Spearfish. Again, the program at the Stanley County School District in Fort Pierre is scheduled to begin this fall.
TeamMates was founded in Nebraska in 1991 by Coach Tom and Nancy Osborne.
