The City of Fort Pierre has received word that it may be asked to help supply the Southwest Power Pool with energy during peak times yet this summer.
Public Works Director Rick Hahn says Fort Pierre gets its electricity from the Western Area Power Administration (WAPA) and Missouri River Energy Services.
But, Hahn says, the generation station can’t supply enough electricity for all of Fort Pierre during peak demand and it’s less economical.
Even though power outages or the need to run the town’s generation station aren’t happening yet, Hahn encourages Fort Pierre residents to be conservative about energy use.
The City of Pierre has told residents power outages may happen, but the entire town shouldn’t be out at the same time and the outages should last no more than two hours.
The Southwest Power Pool is a nonprofit corporation that manages the electric grid and wholesale power market for the central United States. SPP is mandated by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission to ensure reliable supplies of power, adequate transmission infrastructure and competitive wholesale electricity prices. Southwest Power Pool and its member companies coordinate the flow of electricity across approximately 60,000 miles of high-voltage transmission lines spanning 14 states.
