RENNER – A four-run fifth inning Friday helped Post 8 pull away from Renner, then the Eights held on for a 6-4 victory at Renner Park to take a 1-0 lead in the best-of-three regional playoff series.
Post 8 led 2-1 before that inning, then increased the lead to 4-1 on a two-run home run by Lincoln Kienholz. Jett Zabel drove in his second run of the game later in the inning on a ground ball before an error scored another run. Jayden Wiebe had an RBI double in the second to put Post 8 (18-20) in front.
Winning pitcher Bennett Dean struck out four in five innings. Kienholz struck out the final two Renner hitters in the seventh inning for the save.
If Post 8 defeats Renner in the second game of the series at noon on Saturday, the Eights would advance to next week’s state tournament. A Renner win would force a third and deciding game.
