BROOKINGS – Lincoln Kienholz and the Pierre Governors didn’t want to lose in the third straight regular season to Brookings on Friday. A big first half assured they would not.
Pierre led 34-0 at halftime and, behind three touchdown passes and three scoring runs by Kienholz, the Governors ran past Brookings 48-0 at Dana J. Dykhouse Stadium.
Kienholz hit Jett Zabel with a 16-yard touchdown pass in the first quarter, then after a Gavin Stotts interception, Kienholz ran in a six-yard score and Pierre (2-0) led 14-0 after one period.
In the second quarter, a fumble recovery by EJ Boutchee set up a Kienholz 14-yard touchdown run. Brock Moser ran in another score from seven yards with another Kienholz touchdown carry, from two yards, giving Pierre its 34-0 halftime lead.
Kienholz hit for touchdown passes in the third quarter of 27 yards to Jack Merkwan and 46 yards to Brecken Krueger.
Kienholz was 19 of 29 passing for 279 yards and three touchdowns, with eight carries for 51 yards and three touchdowns. Moser ran 14 times for 69 yards.
