PIERRE – When the Pierre Governors open the 11AA football playoffs Thursday at home, they will have a scrappy and potentially bothersome opponent.
Top-seed Pierre will host eight-seed Sturgis Thursday at Hollister Field at Phil Trautner Stadium.
Pierre is 9-0 and aims for a record-tying sixth consecutive championship. Sturgis is 4-5 and was 2-1 after beating Aberdeen Central. That was followed by three straight losses, then two straight wins, then an overtime loss last Thursday at Spearfish.
These teams did not meet in the regular season. Pierre beat Sturgis at home during the 2021 regular season 21-6.
Governor Head Coach Steve Steele didn’t have five of his regular starters in last Thursday’s 46-6 win at Douglas. He was asked how many of them will be back for the Sturgis game.
Steele will especially happy to have junior defensive lineman Emmit Andersen back in the lineup.
Steele reflected on last season’s game with Sturgis, which was a Pierre win, but far from a sharp one.
Steele stated his respect for how the Scoopers can play.
Though the thoughts of many in Pierre are on the Governors’ return to the DakotaDome, Steele said that the thoughts of his team aren’t nearly that far ahead.
Pierre and Sturgis play Thursday night in the Capital City in the first round of the 11AA playoffs. Coverage will begin at 6:25 PM on The Official Voice of the Pierre Governors, River 92.7, the River 92.7 page at the DRG News app and at drgnews.com/river, with live and archived video also available. Brian Oakland will call the action.
