JULY 19, 2023:
A teenager from Faith has been identified as the person who died Saturday afternoon (July 15, 2023) in a two-vehicle crash on I 90 near mile marker 50 near Summerset.
Preliminary crash information from the South Dakota Highway Patrol indicates that a 2023 Freightliner Cascadio had been parked on the shoulder of westbound I-90 near mile marker 50. The semi merged back onto westbound I 90 and sped up to 45-50 miles per hour. A 2023 Kia Sportage struck the trailer in the rear and became lodged underneath the trailer. The semi driver brought his vehicle to a stop on the westbound shoulder.
16 year old Jayden Hayford from Faith, the driver of the Kia Sportage, sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene. He was not wearing a seatbelt.
The female passenger in the Kia, a 17 year old from Kadoka, sustained serious non-life-threatening injuries and was taken by ambulance to Monument Health in Rapid City. She was not wearing a seatbelt.
Oscar Rodriguez Jr., age 54, the driver of the Freightliner was not injured. He was wearing a seatbelt. I-90 westbound was closed for about two and a half hours.
JULY 17, 2023:
One person died Saturday afternoon (July 15, 2023, 3:16pm) in a two-vehicle crash on I 90 near Summerset, S.D.
The names of the persons involved have not been released.
Preliminary crash information indicates that a semi had been parked on the shoulder of westbound I-90 near mile marker 50. The 54-year-old male driver of the semi merged back onto westbound I 90. The semi driver stated he had sped up to about 45-50 miles per hour when the semi-trailer was struck by a 2023 Kia Sportage which became lodged underneath the rear part of the semi’s trailer.
The semi driver brought his vehicle to a stop on the westbound shoulder.
The 16-year-old driver of the Kia Sportage sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene. He was not wearing a seatbelt.
The 17-year-old passenger in the Kia Sportage sustained life threatening injuries and was transported by ambulance to Monument Health in Rapid City.
The driver of the semi was not injured. He was wearing a seatbelt.
As of 4:30 pm (MT) I-90 westbound was closed at Exit 52.
South Dakota’s Highway Patrol is investigating the crash. All information released so far is only preliminary.
