AUGUST 4, 2023:
The National Association of School Resource Officers has recognized (June 28-July 3, 2023) a Pierre Police Department School Resource Officer with its Regional Exceptional Service Award.
Officer Jacob Harlow works at the Georgia Morse Middle School.
Harlow was honored for his work during an incident at Georgia Morse in March (March 29, 2023).
During the reunification process, Harlow says there’s a lot going on.
No one was injured in the incident, which again, happened back in March. Because a juvenile was– or juveniles were– involved, names were not released. The processes of evacuation and reunification took a total of about two hours.

APRIL 12, 2023, UPDATE:
During their meeting last night (April 11, 2023), the Pierre School Board received a bad news-good news update on a fire that happened late last month (March 29, 2023) at the Georgia Morse Middle School.
The bad news being that the fire was started, but District Superintendent Dr. Kelly Glodt says the good news is the school’s evacuation plan worked.
Glodt says one thing they don’t get to practice is their reunification plan.
Glodt says there were also debriefing conversations with emergency responders and school staff.
Glodt thanked all entities involved in the response.

The preliminary investigation into a suspicious fire today (March 29, 2023) in a second-floor boys bathroom at Georgia Morse Middle in Pierre indicates the fire was intentionally set.
Walz says the Pierre Fire Department worked to eliminate the smoke from the building and assisted with the evacuation.
Georgia Morse Middle School was closed for the remainder of the day and students were released to parents, per the Pierre School District’s reunification plan. The fire happened around 10:50am CT and all students were turned over to their parents or guardians by 1pm.
The incident remains under investigation.
MARCH 29, 2023, 1PM UPDATE:
The Georgia Morse Middle School in Pierre was evacuated around mid-morning today (March 29, 2023) after a small fire was reported in a second floor boys bathroom.
Pierre Police Captain Bryan Walz says the fire is out and the school needed to be ventilated.

The Georgia Morse Middle School in Pierre was evacuated mid-morning today (March 29, 2023) after a small fire was reported in a second floor boys bathroom.
Pierre Fire Chief Ian Paul says students were moved to a nearby church to keep warm. He says the fire is out and the school is being ventilated.
