The South Dakota State Historical Society’s virtual “History Talks” this evening (Aug. 10, 2023) features the book “Hitchhiking During the Great Depression.”
During the “dirty thirties,” Earl Neller took six children hitchhiking 850 miles from Sioux Falls, to the Black Hills and then to Hebron, North Dakota.
Archivist Matthew Reitzel will share the experiences the Nellers and Kinkaids had in their hitchhiking journey in 1933. He’ll also share how the diaries and photographs related to the trip came into the State’s care.
This free event starts at 7pm CST on Zoom. To register, go to sdhsf.org/events.
“History Talks” is a monthly program of the South Dakota Historical Society Press and the South Dakota Historical Society Foundation.
