Woman, infant get out of burning home thanks to being alerted by smoke detectors

One person received minor injuries in a home fire early Saturday morning (Aug. 12, 2023, 1:45am CT) in the Grey Goose area north of Pierre.

Doug Hinkle with the Pierre Rural Volunteer Fire Department says when they arrived, the roof and upper floor of the residence on Quail Road were on fire.

Hinkle says two nearby homes were evacuated for a short time.

Hinkle says smoke alarms alerted the home’s occupants of the blaze.

Hinkle says the cause of the fire is not suspicious, but is under investigation.

Also responding to the scene were the Hughes County Sheriff’s Office, South Dakota Highway Patrol and AMR ambulance service.
