AUGUST 18, 2023:
A US District Court judge has sentenced an Eagle Butte man convicted of Conspiracy to Distribute a Controlled Substance.
26 year old Larry Chavez was sentenced to two years in federal prison, followed by three years of supervised release, a $1,000 fine, and a special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund in the amount of $100.
Court information says beginning in January of 2021, Chavez and co-defendant Regina Maynard conspired with others to distribute methamphetamine in and around Central South Dakota and on the Cheyenne River Sioux Reservation. Methamphetamine is a Schedule II controlled substance. Maynard was previously sentenced to seven years and three months in federal prison.
This case was investigated by the Stanley County Sheriff’s Office and the Northern Plains Safe Trails Drug Task Force. Assistant US Attorney Meghan N. Dilges prosecuted the case.
Chavez was immediately remanded to the custody of the US Marshals Service following his sentencing.
MARCH 2023:
Chief Judge Roberto A. Lange, U.S. District Court, has determined the punishment for a Swift Bird, South Dakota, woman convicted of Possession with Intent to Distribute a Controlled Substance.
Regina Maynard, age 31, was sentenced to seven years and three months in federal prison, followed by three years of supervised release, a $1,000 fine, and a special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund in the amount of $100.
The conviction stemmed from an incident on February 7, 2022, when law enforcement conducted a traffic stop on Maynard and a co-defendant. They searched the vehicle and found inside Maynard’s purse a digital scale and several baggies. Five packages of methamphetamine, totaling 139 grams of pure methamphetamine, were found in a safe disguised to look like a book. Maynard admitted possessing the methamphetamine with the intent to distribute it in and around central South Dakota and on the Cheyenne River Sioux Indian Reservation.
This case was investigated by the Stanley County Sheriff’s Office and the Northern Plains Safe Trails Drug Task Force. Assistant U.S. Attorney Meghan N. Dilges prosecuted the case.
Maynard was immediately remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service.
APRIL 2022:
A 30 year old woman from Fort Pierre and a 25 year old man from Eagle Butte have been indicted by a federal grand jury for Possession with Intent to Distribute a Controlled Substance.
Regina Maynard and Larry Chavez both pled not guilty.
The indictment alleges that on February 7, 2022, in Stanley County, South Dakota, Maynard and Chavez knowingly and intentionally possessed with the intent to distribute 50 grams or more of methamphetamine.
The maximum penalty upon conviction is a minimum of 10 years and up to life in custody and/or a $10,000,000 fine, a minimum of five years and up to life of supervised release, and $100 to the Federal Crime Victims Fund. Restitution may also be ordered.
The investigation is being conducted by the Northern Plains Safe Trails Drug Enforcement Task Force, the South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation, and the Stanley County Sheriff’s Office.
Chavez was released on conditions and Maynard was remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service pending trial.
