BROOKINGS – It’s a new head coach, but the same success – and the same award – for the leader of the Jackrabbits.
On Thursday, South Dakota State Football Head Coach Jimmy Rogers was named as the 2023 Eddie Robinson Award as the FCS national coach of the year.
The man whom Rogers replaced, Selby native John Stiegelmeier, was named the winner of this award in 2022, when the Jackrabbits won the school’s first FCS national championship. When Stiegelmeier retired in January, Rogers was promoted from defensive coordinator to head coach.
Under Rogers, SDSU’s success has continued this season. The Jackrabbits are 12-0 and have a 26-game winning streak, the third-longest in FCS history, before a playoff quarterfinal game with Villanova on Saturday at Dana J. Dykhouse Stadium in Brookings. The Jacks are the only team in FCS to be in the top 10 in points scored and yards gained per game and fewest points and yards allowed per game.
Bob Nielsen, who has led South Dakota to a 10-2 record and a quarterfinal game with North Dakota State this Saturday at the DakotaDome, was fourth in the voting.
