The City of Pierre has received a $50,000 grant from the Central Plains Water Development District to help with a major update at the city’s wastewater treatment plant.
The grant pays for engineering costs related to replacing the final clarifier at the plant.
“The Central Plains Water District is an excellent partner,” said Pierre Mayor Steve Mayor. “Throughout the last several years, it has supported a number of major water projects that have allowed us to better serve the community. They do important work!”
A final clarifier is large piece of equipment used during the last stage in the wastewater treatment process. The plant’s current final clarifier is 25 years old and reaching the end of its useful life.
“People often assume the water district can only help with projects that involve drinking water,” said Lynnette Eckert, CPWDD Manager. “Actually, almost any activity involving water can be considered by the districts.”
The CPWDD provides technical support and financial assistant for water and wastewater projects in Hughes, Hyde, Sully, Faulk, and Potter counties. The district is a political subdivision authorized by state law.
The CPWDD has five board members and a manager. Membership includes Greg Lorenz, Onida; Ron Crain, Blunt; Eric Monson, Pierre; Steve Hinker, Pierre; and Russell Anderson, Gettysburg. The group meets at least four times a year to review and approve grant requests.
