Davis Thompson won his first ever PGA Tour event on Sunday at the John Deere Classic, shooting a tournament record -28 and winning by four strokes. While that was impressive, what might have gotten more attention wasn’t even on the course!
It’s known as ‘The Trophy House’, and it continues to deliver on its name as the past three winners have all resided there during the tournament. In 2022, it was J.T. Poston who was staying there and ended up winning, followed by Sepp Straka in 2023 who also won. And thanks to a late change of plans by Straka, Thompson had the go-ahead to stay in what can now only be referred to as the ‘Champions Room’.
While it is common for multiple players to all stay under the same roof during a tournament, the odds of that house hosting three straight future champions are quite low. Move over Tiger Woods and your 142 consecutive cuts made, there’s a new, crazy streak in golf.
I would imagine whoever handles the booking of the Trophy House has had a few phone calls over the past two days, I can only imagine what the humble abode will be renting for in about a year. Knowing how superstitious golfers are, there will be plenty of them chomping at the bit to get a spot in the home for next years tournament looking to make it four-in-a-row.
What could now be called a tradition, whoever ends up winning the tournament pays for the full stay. With Davis Thompson’s winnings coming out to $1,440,000 he shouldn’t have too much of an issue covering the bill.
The PGA travels to Scotland this week for the Genesis Scottish Open, where we will see Rory make his first start back after losing the U.S. Open only a few weeks ago. Tournament play begins Thursday.
