If you follow rodeo in the Midwest, then you have almost certainly heard or seen the name Ryen Sheppick. For reference, it is usually sitting at the top of the results list in, or near, first place. One quick google search of her name and you will see she has been very well covered in her young career, and for good reason.
Sheppick’s most recent string of success came at the SD High School Rodeo Finals where she took home titles in the reined cow horse, girl’s cutting & breakaway roping. All of this combined was enough to award her all-around cowgirl as well, taking home a total of four saddles. Sheppick competes at many levels, from high school to the SDRA, which she most recently competed at the Stanley County Fairgrounds for the 4th of July rodeo.
As a new resident of Pierre, and moving up from Georgia, the State Finals was literally my first rodeo. I will be honest; I was way out of my element, but I was hooked. Seeing all the cowboys and cowgirls compete with such control over their horses, I quickly learned it requires dedicated practice and a passion for the sport to compete. Seeing someone barrel racing or ride a reigned cow horse in competition, you can’t help but hold the utmost respect for them as an athlete. Every time I imagined myself on that horse I ended up in the back of an ambulance.
To help me better understand what it takes to be successful in rodeo, Ryen Sheppick was kind enough to sit down and dive into everything that makes her great. Ryen will compete next July 14th-20th at the National High School Rodeo.
