In a packed Riggs High Gym, the Govs welcomed a Harrisburg team that hasn’t missed the State Tournament seemingly since some of their players had been alive. There’s no room for error in Class AA basketball, and the Govs got out to an early 15-3 hoping to keep a very talented Harrisburg team at bay. But the Tigers settled in and played a strong defensive second quarter, holding the Govs to just five points and cutting the deficit within five. In the second half, the Govs shooting woes continued, but great play underneath the hoop by Grace Richter and Addison Soma helped stave off a comeback attempt until some of the Govs main scorers came to life. Emery Larson had not had a bucket until she knocked down two huge three’s to help extend a single-digit lead for Pierre in the fourth quarter. Lennix DuPris was the main offensive outlet for Pierre, scoring 22, but was also celebrated after scoring her 1,000th career point from the free throw line while knocking down two crucial free throws as the Govs were able to waste the clock down and win 46-39. The celebration ensued as the girls rushed the floor, celebrating the win but also celebrating the milestone set by DuPris. The Govs took turns cutting down the net and taking pictures with the plaque, and now look ahead to Rapid City where they will face off with Brandon Valley, a team that beat them earlier in the season.
