On a perfect spring afternoon in Pierre, around 150 athletes ranging from pre-k through 6th grade got together for the annual Lil’ Govs track meet at Hollister field. Just like your average varsity meet, the kids got to compete in various track events, the softball throw and the long jump.

Govs head girls’ varsity track & field coach Misty Larson helped organize the event, and was thrilled with the success it brought, “It was a great opportunity for the Pierre track and field team to provide a fun night of track and field for the youngsters of our community. We are pleased with the participation of the event as well as the excitement surrounding the sport of track and field in Pierre. Thanks to all who came out for the Little Govs Track Meet, and we appreciate the support.”

There were many members of the varsity team involved to help with the event while also impart wisdom on the upcoming generation. With the event running for as many years as it has been, many of the athletes helping were once competing as a ‘Lil’ Gov’. The meet helps foster excitement in young athletes to enjoy the fun side of running track and competing in the field events, while also giving them insight into the hard work and dedication it takes to compete at a high level.
