Gas line break causes brief evacuation near park in southwest part of Pierre

Area buildings were evacuated, but no one was hurt when a contractor hit a gas line mid-morning Thursday (May 22, 2025) near Steamboat Park in Pierre.

Fire Department Chief Ian Paul said the call was to the intersection of Dakota Avenue and Poplar Avenue.

Paul says the majority of the buildings that got evacuated were residential.

Paul says firefighters were on scene for about 45 minutes. He says local law enforcement assisted with the evacuation process.
