Home owners in the East Acres, Northstar and Iseman mobile home parks in Pierre are hoping city hall can help them do something to prevent their Iowa-based landlord from raising rent and adding various fees onto the owners’ monthly bills.
Shale Kramme told the Pierre City Commission (May 27, 2025) that the increased costs could end up eliminating some of the few areas in town where people can find affordable housing.
Kramme shared some of the cost increases residents are facing, starting July 1, 2025.
Bobbie Ziegler questioned whether some of MHP Communities’ fees can be implemented.
East Acres resident Delaine Campbell said MHP is going to start charging them to park some vehicles along city streets.
As a way to slow down the cost increases, Kramme asked Pierre City Commissioners to consider passing an ordinance that would regulate annual rent and fee increases.
Kramme said without some sort of intervention, many of the current mobile home park residents won’t be able to afford to stay.
Because the topic was brought up during the public comment period, Pierre City Commissioners couldn’t discuss the matter further. However, they could include it on the agenda of a future meeting, which would allow them to have a public conversation with the concerned mobile home park residents.
