Wall Eagles head coach Lex Heathershaw said one of the biggest keys to success to win the 9A State Championship would be the battle in the trenches. When all was said and done, his team met his expectations and then some.
The Eagles had been dominant all year long, winning each of their regular and postseason games convincingly. The Eagles also scored 50 or more points in just about every one of their contests.
Led by captains Jace Mohr, Younger Amiotte, Dawson Handcock and Trevor Schulz, the Eagles stormed out to a 26-0 lead in the first quarter. With dramatic and acrobatic plays, the Eagles took a 47-6 lead into the half almost assuring their trophy.
The Howard defense did a nice job answering in the second half holding the Eagles to just 13-points, but they couldn’t get any rhythm going against the stout Wall defense.
The Eagles would win it 60-6 for yet another State Championship adding to their 2000’s total.
State Championship play continues on this afternoon with St. Thomas More and Elk Point-Jefferson followed by the Pierre versus Yankton game at 7:00 PM CT. The Govs game will be covered on River 92.7.
