When Stanley County took down the Winner Warriors at the buzzer back in mid-December, they proved internally that they could win the close games when it came down to crunch time. That experience paid off again last night as they snuck out of Todd County with a 56-54 win.
Todd County came out swinging, taking an early two-point lead in an offensively fueled first quarter. The Buffaloes would settle in later in the second half building up an eight-point cushion, but it was clear the Falcons were not going to go away quietly. Both defenses really locked in as a high-scoring affair slowly shifted the opposite direction. The Falcons game storming back in the fourth quarter to cover up the deficit, and ultimately tie up the game at 52-52.
After two clutch Jack Deal free throws to give Stanley County a late two-point lead, Todd County, again, found a way to knot things back up. Head coach Joey Fischer called the number of one of his best in Eddie Duffy to take the Buffs final shot of the evening. Duffy would ball-fake his defender freeing up space and knock down the long jumper that would end up being the game-winner.
Stanley County needed all of their key players to improve to 13-2 on the season, as Paxton Deal and Duffy both shot well from outside finishing with 17 points each. Teegyn Breitag continued his dominant work in the paint finishing with 17 points as well.
Stanley County will go on the road Thursday night against Chamberlain in search of win number 14 on the season. Coverage of that game will be on KGFX beginning around 7:30 PM CT.
