Strained relationships were on full display again this week during the Fort Pierre City Council’s regular meeting (May 18, 2026).
During one of at least three different tense conversations, Alderman Larry Cronin took issue with some of the information Mayor Gloria Hanson wrote for the city’s quarterly newsletter, which arrived in some mailboxes Monday. Cronin called it a “campaign letter.”
Cronin said he thought the timing of the newsletter, which is sent to all Fort Pierre utility customers, was “really wrong” and suggested he may ask the Attorney General’s Office for their opinion.
Hanson responded to Cronin’s comments saying the information was similar to what she’s included in the city newsletter since she was first elected in 2014, but Cronin stood firm about his perception of the information.
In the June 2, 2026, primary election, Hanson is being challenged by Ward 1 Alderman Greg Kenzy, while Larry Cronin is being challenged by Kevin Tiger for the Ward 1 alderman seat. In Ward 3, Alderman Rick Cronin has been challenged by Kristin Gabriel. Mike Jacobson is unchallenged for a Ward 2 alderman spot after Scott Deal chose to not seek reelection.
