It is extremely tough to save your best golf for the last state tournament of the season. However, Monday saw a few players reaching numbers that aren’t often seen at the high school level.
Some of the most impressive scores came from Twin Rivers Golf Club and the girls Class A tournament where the top two combined for seven strokes under par. St. Thomas More’s Kaitlin Strain would fire an astounding -3, 67, not to be outdone by Dakota Valley’s Katie Betsworth who shot a -4, 66. Those two, shockingly, hold the top two spots on the leaderboard. Dakota Valley and St. Thomas More also held the third and fourth spots after day one with Rylan Horning and Addisyn Sailer both shooting two-over 72’s. Chamberlain’s Trey Speer holds down the fifth spot at +5.
In Class B at Brookings Country Club, Gavin Colson came into the clubhouse with a confident -1, 71, the only player subpar on the day. Even as comfortable as it is to have the only round in red numbers, a huge group looms behind the senior. JD Thompson, Larz Tvedt and Wiley Cronin all sit tied for second with rounds of 73’s on the books. Then, just a stroke behind is a four-way tie made up of Bryson One Star, Shay Weber, Drew Knoblock and Madden Merkwan. A packed leaderboard that will make for an intriguing day Tuesday.
In the Class B boys team championship, Philip came in at the top with a combined score of +13 with all three of their representatives shooting sub-80 rounds. Wessington Springs, led by Johnson Luke Larson and Tucker Thompson, sits second three strokes behind the Scotties. Bon Homme finished up the day in a close third at +18.
In Watertown at the Girls AA Championship, they too saw a subpar round as Ari Jacobs finished -2 with a very impressive 70. But Jacobs also has some traffic in her rearview to deal with as Aberdeen’s Olivia Braun sits just two-strokes behind after shooting an even-par 72. With nine players within five strokes of the lead, that tournament will be an exciting finish as well.
