At Wednesday’s (June 17th) meeting of the Walworth County Commission, Walworth County Deputy Assessor Deb Kahl visited with the commissioners about adding a half-cent sales tax.
The half-cent sales tax issue will be put on the next agenda to be discussed and acted on.
Landfill
Commissioner Duane Mohr reported on the results of Clean-up Days in May, and also the Landfill’s monthly report.
Highway
The commissioners approved a utility easement on Flying W Road for Jess Kraft, who is putting in a residence. Walworth County Highway Superintendent Tom Hannan said Kraft is not crossing any roads but is in the right-of-way with a water line.
The board also approved two summer mowers starting June 22nd – Cassie Lingle and James Ackerman.
Emergency Management
Walworth County Emergency Manager Jeff Jensen will be traveling to Pierre in July for debris management training.
Jensen also mentioned that the flags displayed on the Veterans Memorial on the front lawn of the Courthouse are in rough shape and need to be replaced.
Sheriff
The board approved Kaleb Claymore as part-time transport, as needed, in the Sheriff’s Department.
They also gave approval to Kyle Brown as part-time Deputy Sheriff, as needed, starting June 19th.
Auditor
The commissioners approved the proposal from Dakota Sound Systems, minus the purchase of a new TV monitor as the current monitor is in good working order.
The Courthouse will get a new server installed from Twotrees Technologies, approved by the board.
The commissioners also gave approval to a fourth voting center in Java, and they approved Resolution 2026-05 authorizing vote centers in the County.
Auditor Kim Dills said the May month-end report did not balance due to a returned check on the last day of May. Dills said the check went back through on the first working day of June and was good.
Commissioner Mohr mentioned that he had been contacted by several residents regarding a ballot issue in the June 2nd primary election. Here is the exchange between Mohr and Auditor Dills.
Also at Wednesday’s Commission meeting:
- A special liquor license to sell beer at the upcoming Travis Karst Memorial event was approved;
- Pete Weinzirl will attend the South Dakota Disabled American Veterans’ annual benefit school in Sioux Falls in September;
- Six abatements of properties owned by the City of Mobridge were approved; and
- The Courthouse will be closed on Friday, July 3rd.
