WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump says Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers should continue vehicle stops despite recent fatal shootings. Trump’s statements Wednesday (July 15, 2026) run counter to a new suspension of the stop that are used as part of his immigration crackdown. Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin responded by saying later Wednesday that people illegally in the country would be “arrested and deported wherever they are.” But Mullin’s statement didn’t say whether ICE officers will be allowed to make traffic stops. ICE’s enforcement tactics are coming under new criticism after three people have died during encounters with federal officers in just a week.

BIDDEFORD, Maine (AP) — Trump administration officials have told Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers to suspend most vehicle stops after two deadly shootings in little over a week, according to a person familiar with the matter. Tuesday’s (July 14, 2026) order came a day after an ICE officer shot and killed a Colombian man in Maine, renewing criticism of the agency’s tactics during enforcement operations. The suspension is not absolute and there’s room for exceptions when executing a criminal warrant or working with partner agencies, according to a person who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss sensitive law enforcement operations. The Department of Homeland Security says an ICE officer, “fearing for public safety,” shot and killed the man.

BIDDEFORD, Maine (AP) — A federal immigration officer fatally shot a motorist in Maine on Monday (July 13, 2026), the second time in a week that U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents have used deadly force. Sen. Angus King, an independent from Maine, said Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin told him that the agent opened fire Monday after the man tried to use his vehicle as a weapon against agents who were pursuing him for deportation. Bystander video taken after the shooting showed agents trying to slow a white sedan that was driving in circles in an intersection in Biddeford, southwest of Portland. Immigrant rights groups identified the man as a 26-year-old Colombia native. Protesters quickly gathered near the shooting scene.
