The Walworth County Commissioners began their July 22nd meeting by going into an executive session for a personnel matter.
Highway
When they came out of executive session they approved upcoming travel for Highway Superintendent Tom Hannan to attend training in August in Pierre and the South Dakota Counties Annual Convention in Sioux Falls in September.
Also for the Highway Department, the board:
- Approved acceptance of a bid from Harding County for grinding of five miles on US Highway 12 to 133rd Street. Hannan is to come back at the next meeting with the proposal of what he plans to do;
- Approved the Faulk County bid for chip sealing;
- Approved the temporary easement on the Schlomer gravel contract on a 4 to 1 vote (Commissioner Jim Houck voted against);
- Did not pass a motion to make an exemption to re-hiring in the County policy manual – it died for lack of a second;
- and they approved the surplus of the 2016 tilt bed trailer.
Landfill
Walworth County Landfill Bookkeeper Penny Goetz told the commissioners that the grant money came through for the landfill storage building – $22,190. Goetz said $11,000 went to HKG for engineering costs.
Jeremy Huber was approved as full-time Landfill employee.
The commission also approved raising tipping fees going into effect on January 1st.
Emergency Manager
Walworth County Emergency Manager Jeff Jensen gave the commissioners an update on the Homeland Security grants for radios.
Jensen said he feels fortunate that he does not need to ask for any budget transfers for the project.
Jensen plans to order the radios within the next month if he can pre-pay the invoices.
Auditor
The commissioners passed a motion on a 4 to 1 vote to advertise for a part-time deputy auditor. Commissioner Jim Houck voted against.
They approved Brooke Kirschman, Brenda DeToy, and Leah Holder attending the South Dakota Counties Annual Convention in September, and DeToy will also attend a welfare workshop.
Budget
The commissioners continued budget discussion with several departments at the end of the meeting.
