An Oklahoma man died Saturday (Aug. 8, 2026) in a single-vehicle crash five miles north of Deadwood, South Dakota.
Preliminary crash information from the South Dakota Highway Patrol indicates 72 year old James Edward Skillett from Shawnee, Oklahoma, the driver of a 2003 Harley-Davidson Electra Glide, was traveling northbound on U.S. Highway 85 in the left lane. Skillett braked as he approached a motorcycle turning left. He lost control of his vehicle and became separated from the Harley-Davidson. He was transported to Monument Health in Spearfish where he died from injuries sustained in the crash. He was not wearing a helmet.
The investigation is ongoing.
The Highway Patrol is an agency of the South Dakota Department of Public Safety.
