The South Dakota State Fair will host its annual “Salute to Veterans” program on Thursday (September 3, 2026) at 10:30 a.m. on the Northwestern Energy Freedom Stage. This event honors the service, sacrifice, and dedication of veterans, active military personnel, and their families from across the state.
This year’s program will feature guest speaker Susan Irons, a 1989 graduate of the United States Military Academy. She is a U.S. Army veteran who served in Operation Desert Shield and Desert Storm. After her military service, she returned to South Dakota and has dedicated her career to serving veterans, including her work as the Lincoln and Union County Veterans Service Officer and establishing the West Point Association of Graduates Veterans Services program.
In recognition of this special day, all veterans and military personnel will receive free gate admission to the fair on September 3.
Throughout the State Fair, representatives from the South Dakota Department of Veterans Affairs will be available at Booth #5A in the Expo Building. Staff will provide personalized assistance and share up-to-date information on state and federal benefits, programs, and services available to veterans and their families.
