The Stanley County Buffaloes didn’t really know what they were going to get with the Lead-Deadwood Golddiggers on Saturday night in the Prospectors Bowl. The Diggers coming off an 0-2 start to Wall and Philip were in the process of re-vamping their offense, and Stanley County was coming off of a 1-1 stretch against Hill City and Bennett County in which they played some good football. One thing they did know was the Golddiggers defense was fast and physical, and that became the story of the game.
After a quick touchdown to make it 7-0, the Deadwood defense would strip Bryant Zeeb and set themselves up in Buffalo territory with a fumble recovery. However, just when it looked like they were set to fall behind two scores, the Buffaloes defense stood tough and denied the Golddiggers on four straight plays at the goal line.
Lead-Deadwood would pick up their second score on somewhat of a trick play in the second quarter when Zane Seaman found Garrett Rantapaa on a wildcat look that ended up as a pass going for 38-yards. Towards the end of the first half, the Golddiggers would sack Zeeb for a safety to make it 16-0 going into the half.
Lead-Deadwood ran away with it in the second half scoring 34 points to post a mercy rule, 50-0 victory. The night for the Buffaloes was marred by fumbled snaps, dropped passes and turnovers throughout.
A bright spot for Stanley County came on both sides of the ball in Jack Deal who turned around the biggest offensive play of the night with a 43-yard catch, paired with two interceptions, a couple pass breakups and a big tackle on 4th and goal to force a turnover on downs.
The Buffaloes will go into the week on a bye, hoping to get healthy and clean up a few mistakes before welcoming in the Parkston Trojans a little less than two weeks away.
