The South Dakota Board of Water and Natural Resources has approved over $1.6 million ($1,638,727) in grants for solid waste and water resource management projects– including one in Pierre.
Pierre received a $172,000 Solid Waste Management Program grant to purchase a replacement scraper for the Pierre Regional Landfill. This grant and local funds will cover the cost of the equipment.
The grants will be administered by the Department of Agriculture and Natural Resources. Funds were awarded from DANR’s State Water Resources Management System and the Solid Waste Management Program.
Other grant recipients announced this week (March 24, 2022) are:
- Custer Fall River Waste Management District received a $15,500 Solid Waste Management Program grant to supplement a $70,000 grant awarded in June 2021. Grant funds are being used for landfill cover and drainage improvements.
- Department of Agriculture & Natural Resources received a $1,021,500 State Water Resources Management System grant to develop new groundwater observation wells for DANR’s Water Rights Program.
- Sioux Falls received a $180,000 Solid Water Management Program grant to purchase a solid waste shredder for the Sioux Falls Regional Sanitary Landfill. This grant and local funds will cover the cost of the equipment.
- Watertown received a $249,727 State Water Resources Management System grant to support the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers effort to update the Watertown & Vicinity Big Sioux Flood Control Study originally completed in the 1990s.
The State Water Resources Management System identifies large water projects that require specific state or federal authorization. Actual funding amounts for each large water project are appropriated by the Legislature.
The Solid Waste Management Program provides grants and loans for solid waste disposal, recycling, and waste tire projects. The Legislature annually appropriates dedicated water and waste funding for the Consolidated and Solid Waste programs through the Governor’s Omnibus Water Funding Bill.
