The South Dakota Wing of the Civil Air Patrol is holding its annual “cadet” youth program competition today (March 26, 2022), with six of the eight events being held in Pierre.
CAP director of cadets for South Dakota Wing Lt. Col. Linda Buechler says judges will evaluate teams in categories that reflect the leadership skills and military aspects of the program. She says the South Dakota winners will advance to the regional competition, and possibly the national contest.
Cadets will be subject to a uniform inspection and evaluated on their ability to prepare uniforms and insignia for proper wear, will give an impromptu speech, and will perform presentation of the colors indoors and, weather permitting, outdoors. Before arriving in Pierre, the teams will be tested for fitness training in their home units and take a proctored written test.
Col. Michael Marek, South Dakota Wing commander, says the CAP youth program develops young leaders, ages 12 and up. He says the cadet members are challenged and rewarded with the confidence, self-worth and accomplishment that comes from making a real and measurable difference.
The day-long competition will be at the Community Bible Church on Harrison Avenue in Pierre.
