RAPID CITY – Though the Pierre Governors couldn’t end their season with a state championship, they did end it with a victory.
Lincoln Kienholz hit a driving layup with 1:35 left in the second overtime Saturday to give Pierre a 68-67 victory over Harrisburg in the fifth-place game of the SDHSAA Boys Class AA State Tournament at the Summit Arena at The Monument.
The Governors (16-8) fell behind by eight points in the second quarter before coming back to tie, then Harrisburg had a 28-24 halftime lead.
After Pierre led 42-41 at the end of three quarters and had a 47-41 lead with just over five minutes left, Harrisburg (15-9) then had a 9-0 run and still led by two with two seconds left when Kienholz hit a jumper to force overtime.
Jackson Edman scored five points in the first overtime for the Governors and Pierre led 65-62 before Harrisburg’s Jacoby Mehrman hit a three at the final horn to force a second overtime.
Kienholz hit a free throw seconds into the second overtime before Ethan Determan hit two free throws with 2:50 left to give Harrisburg the lead at 67-66 before Kienholz’s winning shot, the only made field goal in the second extra four minutes.
Edman starred in his final game for Pierre with 18 points and 16 rebounds. Ben Heisler scored 17. Kienholz, who later on Saturday was named as the AA boys Spirit of Su winner, scored 12 with 10 rebounds.
Determan scored 28 points and Mehrman had 19 for Harrisburg.
Kienholz ended his career as the Governors’ second all-time leading scorer with 1,464 points. Lane Severyn holds the record with 1,486.
The fifth-place finish is the best for Pierre in a boys state tournament since a fifth-place finish in 2015.
