JANUARY 2, 2024:
ARLINGTON, Tex. – Former Pierre standout quarterback Lincoln Kienholz was thrust into the spotlight for the Ohio State Buckeyes Friday night (Dec. 29, 2023) during the Cotton Bowl. The Buckeyes faced relentless pressure from the Missouri defense as the Tigers prevailed, 14-3. The Tigers sacked OSU starting quarterback Devin Brown three times, forcing him out of the game with an ankle injury. Kienholz, who was expected to see some measure of action in the game, ended up playing most of three quarters, but he had similar struggles finding time to throw the football. He completed six of 17 passes for 86 yards and looked good when he had time to throw, but he spent most of the game under duress. After scoring a second straight touchdown in the fourth quarter, the Missouri blitz ultimately reached Kienholz, sacking him and forcing a fumble to put the game on ice. Ohio State ends the season with an 11-2 record as the future of the quarterback position undoubtedly becomes one of the main focuses for next season.

Brady Cook threw a 7-yard touchdown to Luther Burden III with 5:12 left in the game. Ohio State played without two-time All-America receiver Marvin Harrison Jr., who opted out of the game, though the junior hasn’t announced yet if he will enter the NFL draft. The 11-2 Buckeyes finished with only 203 total yards.
DECEMBER 29, 2023:
ARLINGTON, Texas – The college bowl season is in full swing this week, and one game tonight (Dec. 29, 2023) will draw the interest of football fans across South Dakota, but especially in the Pierre area.
The Cotton Bowl pairs seventh ranked Ohio State against #9 Missouri. Former Pierre Governor standout Lincoln Kienholz could stand to play a significant part in the game for the Buckeyes after their starting quarterback all season, Kyle McCord, entered the NCAA transfer portal and has recommitted to Syracuse. McCord’s departure opens the door for Kienholz and sophomore Devin Brown to show what they are capable of, as they are expected to battle for the starting job next season.
Brown has been tabbed as the starter for the Cotton Bowl, but most Buckeye fans expect to see both QB’s at some point throughout the game. Brown has thrown for 197 yards and two touchdowns backing up McCord this season while Kienholz has appeared in two games, completing four of five passes for 25 yards. Kienholz ended his Pierre Governor career last year as the all-time leading passer in yards and touchdowns in South Dakota history.
The Cotton Bowl kicks of at 7:00 Central Time tonight and can be viewed on ESPN.
