Starting this month (April 2025), local U.S. Department of Agriculture personnel plan to do 15 controlled burns on the Fort Pierre National Grassland. The goal is to reduce overgrown vegetation in order to help protect communities, infrastructure and natural resources from wildfires.
For public safety, the areas where burns occur might be closed for several days. Watch for warning signs along roads near prescribed fire areas before and during burns.
Residents may experience smoke during the prescribed burns. When driving, slow down and turn on your headlights when you encounter smoke on the road.
For information about the prescribed fires, go to the InciWeb website, https://inciweb.wildfire.gov/, or go to the Nebraska National Forests & Grasslands website and social media channels. For information about air quality, go to https://fire.airnow.gov/.
