State prison inmate serving time out of Hughes County passes away in custody

State prison offender Marc Best has died.

The 29 year old Best passed away Wednesday (May 28, 2025) in a comfort care setting at the Jameson Annex to the South Dakota State Penitentiary in Sioux Falls. According to the South Dakota Department of Corrections, he had been housed there “for some time.”

At the time of his death, Best was serving sentences for aggravated assault from Hughes County, sliming/assault by an inmate, and simple assault on law enforcement from Minnehaha County.
