Alan J. Iron Eyes, Sr. (aka Alan J. Schlecht), 57, of Seattle, WA passed away Tuesday, December 31, 2024, in his home of severe pneumonia.
A celebration of life will be 10:00 a.m. MDT, Saturday, July 26, 2025, in CRST Bingo Hall, Eagle Butte. Burial will follow at St. Elizabeth Episcopal Cemetery, Wakpala, SD.
Alan Jay Iron Eyes was born to Ellitta (Dogg) and John Schlecht on February 18, 1967, in Mobridge, SD. Alan attended elementary school at Zion Lutheran Day School until the passing of his parents and sister, Sherilynn Schlecht. After the separation from a younger sister, Shannon Kendra Schlecht, being in foster home, he and his brothers spent a short time with Alvin and Alvera Ducheneaux and attended White Horse Day School. After attending the Little Eagle celebration family incident, all three of the Schlecht brothers went to live with their late Uncle George and Auntie (mom) Bertha who would become their Hunka parents and family.
Even though Alan and his brothers are Standing Rock Sioux Tribe citizens, they grew up in Eagle Butte, SD on the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe reservation with Alan attending junior high school for a short time.
In 1995 Alan met and married Randi (Belgarde) Vettleson. From this marriage they welcomed Ellitta, Sherilynn, Alan Jay, Jr. and Oroc.
Alan is survived by his children Sherilynn Iron Eyes, Alan J. Iron Eyes, Jr., and Oroc Iron Eyes all of Seattle, WA; sisters: Marla (Mike) Collins, Linton, ND, Elizabeth Ducheneaux, LaPlant, SD, Susie Ducheneaux-Laplante, Eagle Butte, SD, Brenda Ducheneaux, Eagle Butte, SD, and Robin (Glen) Dupris, Eagle Butte, SD; brothers: Conrad (Dana) Schlecht, Eagle Butte, SD, Randall Schlecht, Bremerton, WA, Rollie Ducheneaux, Eagle Butte, SD, Victor Ducheneaux, Blackfoot, SD, and Francis Ducheneaux, Eagle Butte, SD; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Alan was preceded in death by his mother, Ellitta (Dogg) Schlecht; biological father, Edward Iron Eyes; stepfather, John Schlecht; daughter, Ellitta Iron Eyes; sisters: Sherilynn Schlecht and Shannon Schlecht; and niece Loreal Usesknife.
Luce Funeral Home of Gettysburg has been entrusted with Alan’s arrangements.
