A traditional in-person Hunter Safety and Firearms Education (HuntSAFE) class has been scheduled for Sept. 1, 2, 4 and 6, 2025, starting at the Izaak Walton League Clubhouse in southeast Pierre.
Classes will be held from 6-8:30pm CT Sept. 1, 2 and 4. On Sept. 6, class will be held from 8-10:30am at the Oahe Downstream Recreation Area Shooting Range. Attendance is required at all sessions.
Young people between the ages of 12 and 16, as well as those who will turn 12 by Dec. 31 and who will hunt during the current year after Sept. 1, are required to successfully complete a Hunter Safety and Firearms Education course and possess a HuntSAFE card while hunting.
Additionally, a Field Day for the Online Independent Study HuntSAFE course will be held on Sept. 6 at the Oahe Downstream Recreation Area Shooting Range from 8am-12pm. The online course work must be completed prior to the field day.
Parents are encouraged to attend with their children. People wishing to brush up on their safe hunting skills are also encouraged to attend.
