This is National Fire Prevention Week (Oct. 5-11, 2025).
Pierre Volunteer Fire Department Chief Ian Paul says this year’s theme is “Charge into Fire Safety: Lithium-Ion Batteries in Your Home.”
Within the past year, Pierre has begun offering lithium-ion and rechargeable battery recycling and disposal services. Solid Waste Manager Val Keller says this greatly reduces the risk of a lithium-ion battery starting a fire.
Paul says we do need to be careful how we store the batteries while waiting to take them in to be recycled.
Keller says anyone with questions should call the Baling Facility.
Paul also offers these Fall fire safety reminders….
For more information about the smoke detector program, Pierre residents should call the fire department at 605-773-7401. Please leave a message if no one answers.
