Today (Nov. 24, 2025) is the deadline to register chili and soup entries for the cook-off contest being held as part of Fort Pierre’s annual Annual Christmas Tree Lighting on Friday (Nov. 28).
Sunny Hannum is with the Fort Pierre Development Corporation.
To register your soup or chili entry, call the FPDC Office at 605-223-7603 or email fpdc@fortPierre.com.
Hannum says today is also the day this year’s big tree is scheduled to be moved and set up in the manhole at the south end of Deadwood Street.
On Friday, Hannum says chili and soup tasting will occur from 4-6pm CT at the Community Youth Involved Center. A free will donation is taken at the cook-off to assist town residents who are struggling to pay their heating bills. There will not be wagon rides this year because of the EHV-1 virus, which is deadly to horses.
DRG Media Group’s Dakota Cruiser will play music during the wagon rides and Santa will appear. Christmas caroling will take place at 6pm, with area youth invited to participate. The switch to light the tree will be thrown at 6:30pm CT.
FPDC is also holding a holiday lighting contest again this year. Anyone wishing to enter, should send their name, address and phone number to fpdc@fortpierre.com. The winner will be selected from entries received and given a $25 gift certificate to the Fort Pierre Dakotamart. Business Lighting Decorations will be judged by the FPDC Board of Directors.
