An 18-year-old Eagle Butte man convicted of Voluntary Manslaughter and Discharging a Firearm During a Crime of Violence has been sentenced in federal court.
Dante Johnson must serve 15 years in federal prison, followed by 5 years of supervised release.
Court information says the charges are from an incident that happened January 12, 2019, when Johnson shot a gun, which people in a neighboring house heard. Upon hearing the noise, the victim exited the residence to see what was going on. As the victim stepped forward, Johnson pointed a handgun at him and shot the victim in the chest. The victim collapsed and died due to the gunshot wound.
This case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods, a program bringing together all levels of law enforcement and the communities they serve to reduce violent crime and make neighborhoods safer for everyone.
