Visitors to Oahe Downstream Recreation area are being required to approach the park from the north until early October due to construction along State Highway 1806.
The State Department of Transportation is replacing mainline cross pipes on a quarter-mile stretch of the highway west of Pierre/Fort Pierre, making it impassable. The stretch starts just north of the Game, Fish & Parks regional office on Highway 1806, two and a half miles north of Highway 14. The closure is expected to be in place until October 9.
Visitors to Oahe Downstream need to approach the park from the north on Highway 1806 during this time. Travelers from the east or from inside Pierre and Fort Pierre should take Highway 1804 north of Pierre, cross the dam on Highway 204 and turn south onto Highway 1806.
Visitors to the off-highway vehicle area, archery range, shooting complex, stilling basin and nearby West Shore Lakeside Use Area need to take the northern route. The GFP Regional Office is accessible from the south on Highway 1806 when coming from Highway 14.
